How about a little color inspiration?

The main Marimekko store in town does the trick without fail.

Every.
Single.
Time.

I would have shown you more, but they told me photography was not allowed...
WHAT?!?

That is just wrong.

..grumble grumble...

Next time I'll pretend to be a tourist with no language skills :P

This is what I hauled home from the bits and pieces bins this past summer.

Don't you love that monkey?

October skies...

Have you heard of conceptual knitting?
I hadn't either...

But when I came across this project online, it got me hook, line and sinker.
So intriguing...
And doable.

I didn't want a scarf, so I made my project wider, so it will end up being a nice big wrap.
Imagine wrapping yourself in a lovely woolen sky to get cozy?
As I said.. hook, line and sinker..

Blue, light blue= clear skies

White= cloudy

Blue + white= some clouds in a blue sky

Grey= rain

The black one?

We had a thunderstorm.

In October.. very unusual...

If I miss a day, I write the colors down and catch up at some point during the week.

Can't wait to see this completed at the end of September 2012.

in the morning

Buses with creaky breaks opening their doors with a deep sigh.

Cars with studded winter tires already on.

A passing tram on its' rails.

The wind whispering in my ear.

Laughter.

Phones.

Leaves falling on the wet asphalt.

Different languages all around me.

The clicking of high heels.

Doors opening.

A leaf blower.

Good mornings being wished.

Music listened to by the bus driver.

A helicopter.

The sounds of a morning in my city.

...eerie...

The job of decorating the teachers' room table for Halloween/Christmas/Valentine's Day/Easter seems to fallen on me...
Not that I mind in the least.
I like coming up with a nice surprise for my coworkers :)

Today I transformed the table into a spooky forest.

The table runner is glued together from pages from a Hammond Innes novel... I really do have some kind of a addiction to crfating with old books.
The dried pine branches were stuck into air-drying clay that I painted black and sprinkled a little glitter onto.

And then those ghosts....

...they came out sooo cool.

I've stuck battery operated tea lights underneath for the glow.

How are they made?

I dipped white cotton fabric into a white glue and water mix, wrung it dry and draped over my models:

two small lego princes, two Bratz dolls and one action man all draped in cling film...
Really.. I got some funny looks when I was walking around with those.. it looked like a fetish gone a little awry :P

After a good 6-7 hours of drying, the ghosts were dry and keep their shape nicely.

And surprisingly easy :)

Any great ideas for a Xmas table?

..is this thing on...

..off to Pinterest then... :)

....boo...

I am aware that Halloween has landed in a way to Finland..
It's an opportunity to throw nice masquerade parties without it being odd, you know?

Ever since our years in Michigan, it has had a slight foothold in our house. Some years we carve a pumpkin. Some years not. This was one of those "not" years.
However I do have a nice collection of ghouls and ghosties that keep us company on Halloween week. The big one at the back joined in yesterday.
I do love the bunch.

The school I work at has had a Halloween tradition since the days of yore..
But, for some reason, this year they have decided our halloween hullabaloo will be on November 4th.. not the friday before Halloween, but the one after.. sigh..
So you won't be seeing my halloween get-up until then :)
Stay tuned.

Stadi skräppää marraskuussa eli osa 6 :D

Skräppäilypäivä
la 5.11.2011

klo 10.00-19.00

Kadunvarsiparkkitilaa on koulun ympärillä. Klikkaa tästä , niin löydät kartan.

-Maksaako se jotain?-
Sisäänpääsymaksua ei ole :)

-Voinko tuoda lapset?-
Ainoa toive on, että sylivauvaa suuremmat lapsukaiset jäisivät kotiin hoitoon, jotta äiditkin saisivat stressivapaata laatuaikaa hyvässä seurassa.

-Kun nälkä iskee-
Tarjoamme aamukahvit, kuka ilmoittautuu vapaaehtoiseksi tuomaan kahvileipää? :) Ihania herkkuja olette tuoneetkin! Ja joo.. mä muistan sen MAIDON! :D

What makes for a cozy autumn day? (a.k.a. a give-away!)

I love October.
I really do...

The colors are brighter.
There's a lovely crispness in the air...
The evening comes earlier, so you can light candles.. lots of them..

You are allowed to wear your new wool socks 24/7, if you feel like it :)

Drink plenty of hot tea.

(don't you just love how my sugar cube melted into bubbles still resembling a cube?)

The colors in my neighbors rowan tree make me smile every morning.
(please disregard the mess on the desk.. working on some miniature projects.. in fact the mess is even worse today!)

Even rain showers are lovely.

They leave cool puddles.

Can you name all the trees that shed their leaves?
I'll help you: rowan, maple, birch, oak, chest nut and alder.

I've got a little something for one lucky someone :)

I crocheted these cozy wrist warmers for you...

All you have to do to enter the draw is to tell me your favorite thing about autumn.

Mine has to be cozying by the fire.. preferably with a good book and a glass of red wine.

I'll give you a week :)

Then I'll randomly draw a lucky winner.

An ode to autumn...

I took my camera out on walks in the forest several times last month... and found all the fly agarics (that's kärpässieni, for my Finnish readers) around ;)

I also found this sweet little snail....

I don't know what it is about these poisonous mushrooms..
I think their polka-dotted outfit is too cheery for their nature, don't you think?

Last morning of September...

Sure was a beautiful sunrise.

My town- part 7

Last part of my series from this summer... granted it is October already, but these pics were taken back when it was still summer ;)
Sometimes it takes me a while to get stuff up here...
"Nobody's perfect!"
(From one of my alltime favorite movies)

Summer is construction time in the city. Roads are dug up and building sites arise.
Normally the latter also means ugly fences.

Except this year!
The city gave fence space for young artists to use as a canvas.
The theme was peace. Interpretation free.
I really think every city should do this...

Enjoy this street gallery.
This is just a small bite.. there is much more.

My town- part 6 aka lights, lights, lights!

Linnanmäki amusement park

To celebrate Saara's 16th birthday (on Friday), the girls and I headed out to the amusement park on Saturday. Saara and her friend headed out earlier, but Niina and I arrived for the evening fun, from 6pm to 9pm.
The girls were geared for some fun rides.
I on the other hand came with my camera bag loaded carrying my tripod :)

There is hardly any editing on these pics, most of the effects were achieved by longer exposure and a very cool fish-eye adapter lens on top of my 17-70mm lens. That is what gave some of the photos the dreamy quality.

I've never been one for the rides... but I love the sounds. The whirring and whizzing..screams..motors..

This is Niina's favorite ride: the Dragon.

The bigger girls preferred some of the wilder rides :)

I just enjoy the atmosphere of this old amusent park.

The smell of popcorn and cotton candy in the air..

..and of this Lintsi classic :D

Niina and I shared this plate.

The sunset cast gorgeous colors..

The reason why I wanted to go in the evening was that I wanted to test out the longer exposure time to get cool light effects.

Like these:

Exposure times ½ second and 1 second.

Here you can clearly see the effect of the fish-eye adapter. Basically I slapped it on and zoomed :)

..instant dreamy..

This one is edited.. I brought out the blue more.

The fountain after dark.

They were playing these late 50's early 60's tunes and Saara was dancing to them..

Reminded me of how my Mom was at this same place in 1959 at the age of 17 dancing at Paul Anka's concert :)

Why the scared face?

Her friend tested out the newest ride.. it takes you up slowly, flips you at a 90 degree angle, so you are head down, then takes you through a loop and down and up a U shaped turn..

We had a great time.

I'll have to check out when they have their Festival of Lights event and head back with my camera.

And this time remember to take out my 50mm lens for some nice bokeh!
